St. Louis City has the 3rd highest percentage of children living in poverty.
History of Covenant House Missouri

Covenant House Missouri is an affiliate of Covenant House International, which began in 1969 in a small apartment in Manhattan's East Village. From this modest beginning, Covenant House has grown into the largest shelter program for homeless kids in the Americas. Throughout more than three decades and across 21 sites in the United States, Canada and Central America, the mission has remained constant--to give all our kids the unconditional love and respect they may have never felt, and to help them reach their potential.

Covenant House came to St. Louis in 1998, starting with a small Outreach program, and expanded to a Community Service Center in 1999, where multiple direct services are provided for at-risk youth ages 16 to 21. In June 2001, Covenant House Missouri opened its Rights of Passage transitional living program, with 16 beds for young men and women needing a safe, stable place to live while working on the skills needed for successful independent living.

In spring of 2008, CHMO consolidated all of the Missouri sites in to one building called the Center for Youth, located on North Kingshighway. The Center for Youth is home to 20 Crisis beds, 16 Transitional Living beds, an array of supportive services, as well as the Administrative offices.  The Center for Youth provides opportunities for new and exciting venture like a health clinic.

Too old for youth services, yet too young and inappropriate for the adult missions, these youths slip through the cracks of the social service system. Without help, most will join the swelling ranks of the hard-core homeless, become dependent on welfare, and/or enter the court systems and prisons.
